Now that Memorial Day Weekend has come and gone, we are all excited about jumping back into the swimming pool. Most all of us will remember to bring the sunscreen, which is a good thing, but what are you doing to protect your eyes at the pool? Did you know UV radiation increases as much as 25% when you are in or near the water? That is why we sunburn so easily poolside. That same UV radiation can be damaging to your eyesight as well, increasing your chances of acquiring cataracts, macular degeneration, or even skin cancer around the eyelids. That is why we carry a wonderful array of sunglasses that filter out those damaging UV rays. We have a complete line of sunglasses in both Rx and non-Rx to choose from. The sun isn’t the only thing your eyes need to worry about at the pool, however. Pool chemicals can do a number on your eyes. The tear film that coats your eyes is one of nature’s magical wonders in that it’s the water, protein, and lipid combine to protect your eyes and keep them from drying out too quickly. Chlorine and saline, however, wreak havoc on your tear film, leading to redness and itching. These chemicals can also lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. If you wear contact lenses swimming, you are providing a surface for bacterial growth that can lead to complications such as corneal ulcers and in rare cases, vision loss. This swim season we want to recommend you bring 3 things with you to the pool and 4 things back. The first is a good sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. The second is a good pair of sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays too.
SAVE 20% NOW DURING OUR ANNUAL SUNGLASS SALE!The third thing is a pair of swim goggles available at any sports or convenience store. That 4th thing to bring home is a wonderful smile of a fun, safe, and memorable day in the water.
One of our all time favorite sunglass brand names is Maui Jim. Born on the Hawaiian islands, Maui Jim continues to be one of the most innovative designers of sunglasses in the world with something for everyone. A number of the Kennedy & Perkins staff just spent the last two days at the mainland headquarters for Maui Jim in Peoria, Illinois to see the state of the art manufacturing facilities for ourselves. We learned a lot and are bringing back both that knowledge and some great new styles and designs from Maui Jim to our Connecticut friends and neighbors.

How many times have you tried on something at the store, been excited how it looked, bought it, brought it home, and it ends up sitting in your closet because it somehow just didn’t look as good in your mirror as it did in the store? We understand that and years ago introduced a program that was unique in the optical industry that allows you to try them on at home before you buy them in our store. Only Kennedy & Perkins allows Connecticut eyewear shoppers to stop into any one of our six locations and pick out up to 6 pairs of eyeglasses to take home and try on in your environment, at your leisure for up to one week. Get your family, your friends, your neighbors and even your barista’s votes and comments and then before the week is up, stop back in and purchase the pair or two that looks best to you. All you need to participate in our try on at home program is a valid credit card. We take down your number and hold it until you return within 7 days with the frames you took home. Hurry in today to your nearest Kennedy & Perkins location to pick out the frames you want to try on at home.

Did you know that 80% of the UV exposure you will ever receive through your eyes occurs before you are 18 years of age? Children’s eyes are much more sensitive to Ultra Violet Light from the sun as well as blue light from LCD TV’s, mobile phones, laptops, desktop computers and tablets. That’s why protecting their eyes at an early age is so important. Here is an infographic from the folks at Essilor showing the dangers of certain lights to our children’s eyes. As we move into nice weather, now is the time to consider a good pair of sunglasses for your children and a pair for you too.
